A family-run business for over 60 years originally opened by my grandmother, Mrs Thompson in 1939 at the address No. 18 Hallgate, Doncaster, South Yorkshire, specialising in the making of feather quilts. Within months of opening the Second World War was declared and a huge quantity of blackout material was sold, establishing the drapery side of the business.
Throughout the decades DQH gained a reputation as Doncaster’s finest soft furnishing store selling designer curtain fabrics, wallpaper, furniture, curtain poles, carpets and haberdashery. Carpet fitting, re-upholstery and curtain making services were offered, with twelve sewing ladies and a team of fitters employed at the Queens Road Warehouse in Doncaster.
The 70’s brought the introduction of the manufacturing division, Nouveau Fabrics Ltd., where my father Mr Thompson (nicknamed Mr T) expanded the business to supply the trade. The manufacturing business soon outgrew the Hallgate shop and moved to the Queens Road site. The Hallgate shop closed in 1997 in favour of manufacturing but fabrics could still be bought from the “Nouveau Fabrics” mill shop.
My brother, Nigel and I followed into the family business with Nouveau in the mid 80’s, designing fabric, wallpaper and trimming collections for retail at domestic and at an international level for nearly 30 years. We soon decided to develop the business further, refurbished the factory shop and created an interiors showroom for Down Quilt House products.
The re-opening the Down Quilt House in 2012 and the development of Queens Road Design centre gave me the opportunity to follow my passions: fabrics and interiors, establishing my personal venture and individual career in interior decoration.
Today, my 3rd generation heritage is what makes my definitive style and service so special. With great pleasure, I welcome customer’s old and new to the Down Quilt House shop and showroom now located in Bawtry since September 2017.
