A little about us..

We are a family-run business originating in 1939 at No.18 Hallgate, Doncaster, South Yorkshire, specialising in the making of feather quilts. The drapery side of the business established after the Second World War was declared, when we supplied a huge quantity of blackout material to the people of Doncaster.

Over the decades DQH gained a reputation as Doncaster’s finest soft furnishing store selling designer curtain fabrics, wallpaper, furniture, curtain poles, bedding and home accessories. Carpet fitting, re-upholstery and curtain making services were offered by a team of specialists based at the Queens Road warehouse in Doncaster.

The 1970’s brought the introduction of the manufacturing division, Nouveau Fabrics Ltd., where we expanded the business to supply the trade. The manufacturing business soon outgrew the Hallgate shop and moved to the Queens Road site. The Hallgate shop closed in 1997 in favour of manufacturing but fabrics could still be bought from the “Nouveau Fabrics” mill shop.

My brother, Nigel and I followed into the family business with Nouveau Fabrics in the mid 1980’s, designing fabric, wallpaper and trimming collections for retail at domestic and at an international level for nearly 30 years.

We reopened Down Quilt House in 2012 at the redeveloped site of Queens Road Design Centre. This gave me the opportunity to follow my passion for fabrics and interiors, establishing my personal venture and individual career in interior decoration.

Today, my 3rd generation heritage is what makes my definitive style and service so special. With great pleasure, I welcome customer’s old and new to the Down Quilt House shop and showroom now located in Dower House Square, Bawtry since September 2017.
